Peritoneal Mesothelioma

There are several different types of mesothelioma that can display their manifestation at all stages of the cancer. One of the least common types, making up less than thirty percent of all American cases of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma. This type is the least common because it does not manifest in the lungs, but in the abdomen, which is an odd place for a predominantly lung cancer to form.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, just like every other type of mesothelioma. The difference is that peritoneal mesothelioma is caused by ingestion of the asbestos fibers rather than inhalation, allowing them to work their way into the intestinal tract where they can collect, infecting the lining of the intestines or stomach to cause malignant mesothelioma tumors to be created in the abdomen. Tumors related to peritoneal mesothelioma can also be formed by inhaling the asbestos fibers and transferring them through the lymph node system to the abdominal cavity.

Another type of mesothelioma which is a close relative to peritoneal mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which is formed when fluid pockets are created in the lungs as a result of the inhalation of asbestos fibers. In fact, the two types of mesothelioma are so closely related that peritoneal mesothelioma can sometimes be caused by pleural mesothelioma. This can cause doctors who are concerned about the possibility to subject their patients to more testing to determine in which place the cancer occurred first so that they can prescribe the most effective treatment for the disease.

As this type occurs mostly in the lining of the abdomen, there is a greater risk of it more immediately affecting your internal organs. The point of the abdomen lining is to protect the internal organs. The lining does this by not only forming a shield around them, but also secreting liquids which allow the organs to slide against each other without causing damage to themselves. When peritoneal mesothelioma moves into this area, it takes up some of the area that the organs would otherwise be able to move through. It also causes pain by forcing the organs into areas that they would not ordinarily be forced into, causing damage to the internal organs as well as stress on the abdominal lining. The cancer also causes the cells which produce the liquid that protects the organs to overproduce, resulting in swelling in the abdomen, and pain from the over abundance of liquid in the abdomen. Very often this liquid can be drained off, though it is a very painful process that will have to be repeated on a regular basis in order to keep the swelling down.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is the least common type of mesothelioma, however it is just as deadly as any of the others and can actually be caused by the previous existence of pleural mesothelioma. The disease is caused by tumors developed in the lining of the abdomen due to prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers. Though the tumors occur in a different part of the body, the treatments for the disease are the same, with there being no known cure for peritoneal mesothelioma.
