Mesothelioma Treatments

The truly terrible thing about finding out that you have contracted mesothelioma through asbestos exposure is that one of the first things you learn is that, like any other cancer, there is currently no known cure. Mesothelioma is one of the most deadly types of lung cancer. However, just because there is no known cure does not mean that there is no treatment.

Depending upon at what stage your malignant mesothelioma is discovered, there may be a number of possible treatments available to you, significantly lengthening your survival rate as well as possibly reducing the symptoms or severity of the symptoms that you will experience over the course of the disease. Some of these mesothelioma treatments include surgery, radiation treatments, and chemotherapy.

Surgery is usually the first treatment that you will be offered if your type of mesothelioma is discovered early enough. Manifestations of mesothelioma usually include large fluid deposits as well as the presence of tumors. Surgery can usually assist at this stage, removing the infected tumors and clearing the fluid deposits. Even the use of surgery cannot guarantee that the problems, once corrected, will not return. However, it does give you a much better chance of living longer with a better quality of life if your doctor decides that this is a viable option, depending on the stage that the mesothelioma is at when first detected.

Another available option is radiation therapy. Part of mesothelioma is that it emits radioactive gases that can be measured, not only initially to check for the disease, but also monitor its progression. Radiation therapy can be used to neutralize the progression of the disease, much like with any other cancer. This type of therapy has been shown to be very effective in returning the disease to a neutral state for an extended period of time. Radiation therapy is used in conjunction with surgery as a treatment for mesothelioma. The surgery is used to remove as many of the cancerous cells as possible and the radiation therapy is utilized to remove any remaining cancer cells. It is very common for patients who are candidates for surgery to remove their mesothelioma cells to be offered radiation therapy as an additional treatment option.

Another treatment option that is often used in conjunction with surgery or when mesothelioma is only identified in its later stages and is considered inoperable is chemotherapy. Those familiar with other types of cancer will be familiar with this term as it is a very common way of treating aggressive forms of cancer.

Mesothelioma is considered a very aggressive form of cancer and although these types of treatment are available to patients suffering from the disease, they should not be interpreted as cures but rather ways to limit the pain and symptoms suffered by the patient throughout the course of the disease. There is continuing research being done not only with the treatment of mesothelioma through traditional channels, but also through clinical trials and other alternative forms of treatment in the hopes of finding both a better way to deal with the disease and a cure.
