Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs as a result of exposure to asbestos. The tiny fibers of the mineral are carried in the air, and because they are microscopic, are breathed in. These fibers stay in the lungs. Mesothelioma is when malignant cells develop on the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most internal organs. Some symptoms of mesothelioma are shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue.

The level of exposure to asbestos is a big factor determining whether someone is susceptible to mesothelioma or not. Most everyone has at least a little exposure because small amounts of asbestos can be found in water, soil and other parts of the environment. Still, having a small amount of contact is far less dangerous than the level of contact a miner of asbestos, or someone else who has worked closely with it. Regular exposure to asbestos means that you are at a greater risk of developing mesothelioma.

There are a few mesothelioma treatment options for those affected with this illness. Conventional treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and ionization therapy.

Surgery can be performed in which the lining of the chest is removed. This surgery has been largely unsuccessful, and is therefore used most often in conjunction with other treatments. Radiotherapy is performed on those who are able to handle the surgery. It is given after the surgery when radiation therapy, often combined with chemotherapy are used to treat the entire hemi-thorax. This treatment is generally to prevent further complications and growth of the tumor.

Chemotherapy is the only mesothelioma treatment option that has been proven to improve survival. In January 2009, in response to a proven 50 point increase in remission rates, the FDA approved using conventional therapies such as surgery in combination with radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

There are some less common, experimental treatments that can be used instead of, or in addition to conventional remedies. Immunotherapy can be used to encourage the body to produce an immune response to the cancer cells. A newer treatment called heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy is when a chemotherapy agent is heated and then administered to the abdomen, left for one or two hours and then flushed. This allows treatment of the entire abdomen and the administration of various drugs. The heat is also helpful in damaging the malignant cells.

As with any treatment, a doctor is the best person to determine what are the best mesothelioma treatment option for any individual. More detailed information can be found in health guidebooks or online, but it is important to realize that not everyone is a candidate for certain treatments.
