Mesothelioma Prognosis

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in individuals who have been exposed to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that is found naturally in the earth, and has been mined all over the world for years as a material for building and industrial purpose. Mesothelioma cancer is broken down into four stages. It is usually not detected during the first two stages. This is due to the fact that there are usually no symptoms. In some individuals, symptoms may not occur for up to thirty years after the original exposure to the asbestos. During the third and fourth stages, the mesothelioma prognosis is usually discouraging. The treatment options are limited at this point. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments are usually provided only as a remedy to ease pain due to the tumors putting pressure on surrounding tissue and organs.

In general, the life expectancy for suffers of pleural mesothelioma, that is mesothelioma of the lungs, is the most grim of all types of the cancer. These sufferers can experience slight symptoms such as shortness of breath and dry coughing for years and think nothing of it. Although rare, it is not unheard of that an individual can have a life expectancy of ten or even twenty years after the initial diagnosis of the cancer.

Another prognosis factor is the stage of the disease. Although generally detected in its later stages, mesothelioma suffers who are lucky enough to catch it in its earlier first and second stages have a slightly better mesothelioma prognosis.

Overall, there are a number of factors that can determine mesothelioma prognosis. There is still no cure for the cancer, but with improving treatment options suffers can hope for a better prognosis and longer life expectancy.
