Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment

Mesothelioma is defined as a tumor which attaches itself to the cavities in our bodies which surround vital organs. The most common cause for mesothelioma is overexposure to a mineral known as asbestos. Many factory and construction workers have been exposed to asbestos for years, without knowing about it. There are very limited choices for mesothelioma cancer treatment because the disease is often not detected until the late stages, where treatment will no longer do any good.

There are four stages of mesothelioma cancer. During the first stage, a tumor has developed in the cavity lining of the body. The cancer is limited to one area, and has not yet spread to the lymph nodes. During this stage, the most common mesothelioma cancer treatment is surgery. Since the tumor is confined, it is more easily removed than if detected in a later stage. This mesothelioma cancer treatment is often followed by rounds of chemotherapy and/or radiation to ensure that any remaining cancer cells have been killed.

During the second stage of the cancer, the two layers of the pleura are already affected. Fluid begins to build up between the membranes of the lungs and chest wall. Patients may experience a dry, persistent cough during this stage. Mesothelioma cancer treatments involved for this stage often also involve surgery. Since the disease is considered advanced at this point, chemotherapy and radiation are used as pain relieving treatments, rather than as a combative approach.

In the third stage of mesothelioma cancer, the tumors have often spread to other nearby tissue and organs. The lymph node group that is closest to the original tumor site is usually also affected at this time. The most minor symptoms often do now even begin to occur until this stage even though it is considered to be at a very advanced development. Mesothelioma cancer treatments during this stage are generally palliative. This means that the treatments are used purely as a pain reliever. Surgery is no longer an option because the lymph nodes are now affected. Even if the tumor was to be removed, the cancer would still appear in other parts of the body.

During the fourth and final stage of mesothelioma, the tumor has metastasized to other locations in the body that are distant from where the original tumor occurred. Traveling through the blood stream, the cancer has affected other organs and tissue throughout the body. Like the stage three cancer, mesothelioma cancer treatments for stage four are similar. Radiation and chemotherapy are sometimes used in this last stage, but only as a measure to try to shrink tumors to relieve pain in a patient.

The best way to detect mesothelioma cancer early is to know the symptoms. It is also important to know if you have been exposed to asbestos. Early detection is important because there is a limited time frame in which mesothelioma cancer treatment can do any good in combating the disease.
