Mesothelioma Abdominal Cancer

Mesothelioma has been identified as one of the deadliest types of cancer there is. Mesothelioma is linked to the excessive exposure to asbestos, a mineral that has been used as a building material all over the world for hundreds of years. It is a mineral made up of long fibers that are inhaled. Then the fibers attach themselves to the mesothelium, a membrane which pads several internal cavities of the human body.

As of current times, three categories of mesothelioma are defined by doctors. Pericardial mesothelioma goes after the heart. Pleural mesothelioma attacks the chest and lungs. The last type, which is the rarest, is called peritoneal mesothelioma. This type affects the abdominal wall and surrounding organs.

Mesothelioma abdominal makes up only about thirty-five percent of all reported cases. There are about one hundred to three hundred cases are diagnosed every year in the United States.

Symptoms that can be recognized with mesothelioma abdominal are not at all uncommon, making the condition very hard to recognize and diagnose. Some symptoms include weight loss, nagging cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and difficulty swallowing.

The only one hundred percent accurate test to diagnose mesothelioma abdominal is by a tissue sample. A fluid sample is not a good means of diagnosis to determine if mesothelioma is present. It is also recommended to always obtain a second opinion, usually from a certified oncologist.

There are many types of treatment when dealing with mesothelioma abdominal. The main treatment methods include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. These treatments are often used together to bring about the best results.

Surgery to remove tumors due to mesothelioma abdominal is the most used procedure. The surgeon looks for any sign of cancer in the abdominal cavity, then removes as much of the tumor as possible. This is then often followed up with radiation or chemotherapy, or a combination of both. This makes it more likely to kill off the remaining cells due to mesothelioma abdominal.

Although chemotherapy is designed to dominate cancer by slowing down the growth of cells, there are three other types of chemotherapy used to help stop the spread of mesothelioma abdominal. The first type is called neoadjuvant. This type of chemotherapy is made to shrink tumors prior to any procedures, such as surgery. The second type is called adjuvant. Adjuvant chemotherapy is used after surgery to destroy any microscopic disease that may remain. Lastly, palliative chemotherapy relieves symptoms of pain.

Radiation treatments are another way to tackle mesothelioma abdominal. High x-ray beams are used to shrink tumors. It also kills the cancer cells. Radiation is often used to relieve pain in patients. The tumors may be putting pressure on other vital organs and nerve endings.

Long term survivors of mesothelioma abdominal do exist. Knowing the symptoms is one way to have the cancer detected early.
