Lung Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a relatively new disease that has become widespread in the last several years as more and more information regarding its existence has come to light. Lung mesothelioma is caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos, an agent used commonly in building materials, especially for the construction of commercial buildings, up until about twenty years ago.

As with other forms of mesothelioma, lung mesothelioma may take years after the exposure before you begin to experience any symptoms. Some of these symptoms are also similar to other respiratory conditions and include chest pain, pain while coughing, a persistent cough, shortness of breath, and the presence of blood in mucus as you cough. If you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms or a combination of them, it may be prudent for you to visit your doctor for testing. Though there is no known cure for mesothelioma, early detection offers you more options for treatment, including taking some preventative measures that will assist you in having a longer survival rate.

The presence of mesothelioma is usually heralded by several different factors that can be seen through the use of chest imaging tests, or x-rays. Some of these factors include the presence of tumors in the lungs, a large amount of fluid deposits, and raised levels of certain types of proteins, all indicators of the presence of malignant mesothelioma.

Due to the long term exposure rates, it is extremely difficult to detect mesothelioma in its earliest stages. From the time of exposure, it can take anywhere from fifteen to upwards of thirty years for the asbestos exposure to manifest into the symptoms of cancerous lung mesothelioma. That is why it is so imperative that you take action as soon as the symptoms begin to make themselves known. New blood tests are making it possible to not only detect the presence of mesothelioma in its earliest stages, but to also identify individuals who may not be currently infected, but are at risk for developing the disease.

Lung mesothelioma is directly related to lung cancer, and like its sister, is caused by exposure to outside factors, such as carcinogens like nicotine and asbestos. Asbestos exposure or inhalation is directly related to the development of mesothelioma though exposure to other carcinogenic influences such as second hand smoke, diesel fumes, and paint fumes can enhance the effects of the asbestos exposure. Though these types of exposure can cause immediate changes in the health of your lungs, it could still take many years for lung cancer, including lung mesothelioma, to develop to the point where it can be positively identified and treated as effectively as possible.

Though mesothelioma has no known cure currently, with early detection the disease can be treated allowing you a much longer survival rate than if it is detected in the latter stages, operating the same as any other type of lung cancer. In the event that you are aware of asbestos exposure, you should alert your doctor to that fact so that there is a much better chance for your treatment.
