Hope In Experimental Treatments For Lung Cancer

Incidence of cancer are on the rise. It seems everyone is affected by the disease, either directly or indirectly. It has become a part of our lives, and one that science is racing to find a cure for. The personal tragedy of finding out that you or someone you love has cancer is something the world wants to be rid of. No cure has yet been found though, and so for now we can only rely on various treatments to increase the survival rate by removing the cancer or putting it into remission.

Of all cancer related deaths, lung cancer is responsible for more in men than any other type of cancer. In women lung cancer is the number two killer, after breast cancer. Environmental pollutants can play a role in the development of lung cancer, but the main factor that puts lung cancer at the top of the charts for cancer related death is the issue of cigarette smoke. Almost ninety percent of deaths due to lung cancer are caused by smoking.

Of course the first thing that should be done to avoid getting lung cancer is to never start, or to quit smoking right away. Still too many people will not heed the ever more urgent warnings, and will develop lung cancer. Once it has been detected, the next step is to start into treatment as soon as possible.

A main conventional treatment for non small cell lung cancer is surgery. There are different kinds of surgery performed depending on the type and location of the cancer. Often all the cancer can be removed through surgery. In cases of small cell cancer, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the first options, as surgery has not been proven effective. In adjuvant chemotherapy for NSCLC chemotherapy is used post operatively when samples from the lymph nodes taken during surgery contain cancer.

Experimental treatments for lung cancer include interventional radiology, which is currently being tested, but without any conclusive data. It is used in cases of bronchogenic carcinoma when a heat probe is entered into the cells to kill the tumor. In recent years, different kinds of targeted therapies have been developed to treat advanced lung cancer. In targeted therapy, various drugs can be used to target specific areas and types of parts of the tumors. Some agents have started to prove promising enough that they are in the early stages of clinical research with the possibility of them becoming a common treatment.

Until a cure is found for cancer, there will be a continuing need for improved treatments. Conventional methods will, of course, continue being used, but there is an every increasing need for more information, and experimental treatments for lung cancer, while not always effective, offer a chance for us to find the next great treatment that can make a big difference in the lives of those affected by this terrible disease.
