About Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals that are made up of long, fibrous crystals. These fibers are fire, heat and chemical resistant and have been recognized as such for many years. Because of these unusual properties, asbestos has been used in building and construction for strengthening cement and plastics and for insulation.
The ancient Greeks, Persians and Romans wove asbestos fibers into cloth. Much later, in the second half of the 1800's, asbestos was used as insulation and went on to be more widely used in construction and building, being mixed into tiles and cement and used in roofing. In the first century A.D. the Greeks recognized that the slaves who worked with asbestos often contracted an illness of the lungs. Asbestos was understood to have health hazards. This was rediscovered toward the end of the 1800's.
Asbestos crystals can be so small that it is impossible to see it with the naked eye. This means that you are unaware that it is even in the air. Breathing those crystals in, particularly in concentrated doses can create a build-up in your lungs and can cause severe irritation and scarring of the tissues.
Asbestos exposure can be extremely high for those who work directly with the mineral. Miners of asbestos commonly contract asbestosis or mesothelioma, two lung conditions that are brought on by extensive asbestos exposure. There is also a risk of developing these illnesses for those who work with asbestos in building or shipbuilding or are otherwise exposed on a regular basis. Families of those who work with asbestos are also at risk, as asbestos may be left on the clothing, shoes or hair and be released into the air at home in significant quantities.
Although the use of asbestos has been largely banned, there are many buildings and other structures that still contain it. This means that in remodeling or tearing down of older buildings it is necessary to ensure that they do not contain asbestos before you begin, or if they do, to have it taken care of by a qualified professional.
Those whose asbestos exposure is minimal are much less likely to suffer an illness related to that exposure. Still, it is possible to contract an illness or suffer the side effects of exposure to even small amounts of asbestos.
For those who have experienced regular or excessive asbestos exposure, there are many resources for determining if or how it has affected your health. There are numerous online sources of information to help you recognize some of the possible symptoms as well as how to seek medical attention and what your options are, for those who have worked with asbestos, as far as getting compensation for damage to your health.
